Core concepts

Audience situation: Describe what changed for the attendee, what they are trying to accomplish, and why the issue matters now. ‘Marketing leaders’ is a segment; ‘a marketing leader preparing a first attribution review after losing trust in channel reports’ is a situation.

Learning decision: Name the belief, comparison, plan, or action the session should make easier. The event should deliver this progress even when an attendee never buys.

Business job: Choose one primary commercial purpose: create qualified conversations, support a launch, activate customers, retain accounts, educate partners, or prove demand. One webinar may help several goals, but one should govern the design.

The practical method

Ask recent customers what happened before they looked for help, what they searched, and what they wished they understood sooner.

Use: ‘By the end, [audience] can [observable decision or action] without [important risk or confusion].’ Remove claims the event cannot reliably deliver.

For some attendees it may be a worksheet; for others a product trial, consultation, or implementation session. The step must follow from the lesson rather than interrupt it.

Pick the most important unknown the event can answer for the business, such as which objections stop qualified buyers or which example makes the method click.

Do not build the full event if interviews reveal weak urgency, the audience is unreachable, or a simpler asset solves the same decision better.

  1. 01

    1. Interview the moment before registration Ask recent customers what happened before they looked for help, what they searched, and what they wished they understood sooner.

  2. 02

    2. Write the attendee transformation Use: ‘By the end, [audience] can [observable decision or action] without [important risk or confusion].’ Remove claims the event cannot reliably deliver.

  3. 03

    3. Define the next useful step For some attendees it may be a worksheet; for others a product trial, consultation, or implementation session. The step must follow from the lesson rather than interrupt it.

  4. 04

    4. Choose a learning question Pick the most important unknown the event can answer for the business, such as which objections stop qualified buyers or which example makes the method click.

  5. 05

    5. Set a stop rule Do not build the full event if interviews reveal weak urgency, the audience is unreachable, or a simpler asset solves the same decision better.

Worked example

A payroll platform first proposes ‘The Future of HR.’ Interviews reveal a sharper situation: operations leaders are preparing for multi-state hiring and do not know where payroll registration breaks. The webinar becomes ‘Plan your first multi-state payroll rollout without missing a registration step.’ It teaches a planning map and offers a readiness review to teams with a real launch date.

Build the template

Create this working artifact before moving to the next lesson:

  • Audience and triggering situation
  • Decision the session will improve
  • Tangible output attendees leave with
  • Primary commercial job
  • One learning question for the team

Quality checklist

  • The audience is narrow enough to recognize itself
  • The promised progress can happen inside the session
  • The event remains useful without a purchase
  • The commercial next step is relevant
  • The team knows what it wants to learn
