Core concepts

Room contract: Tell people the duration, agenda, interaction method, replay policy, and when questions will be handled.

Relevant credibility: Use experience, data, or a case directly connected to the lesson—not a complete life story.

Permission to pitch: Tell attendees whether an optional offer will be explained and when. Transparency reduces the feeling of a bait-and-switch.

The practical method

Describe the situation that brought the audience to the session.

Tell them what they will understand, create, or decide.

Cover timing, questions, participation, captions, and replay.

Use one or two facts that support the right to teach this topic.

Use a relevant poll or chat prompt that also informs the presentation.

Worked example

A presenter once spent 11 minutes on awards before teaching. The revised opening names the operations problem, promises a completed handoff map, states the 50-minute format, explains Q&A and replay, and uses one customer result plus a transparent note that implementation help will be offered at the end. Teaching begins in under four minutes.
